And What about College/University Teaching?

The following are qualities that are considered when a College/University begins its search for a music teacher. It is not an inclusive listing.

1

Demonstrated success at either the secondary level or at another college or university. Status of graduate study.

2

The ability to interact in a constructive way with other teachers in and out of his/her discipline.

3

Evidence of musicianship. Does this person’s performance display sensitivity in nuance and finesse. Performance ability, instrument played and/or group conducted, choice of repertoire - all are factors.

4

The ability to articulate his/her views effectively in different ways and settings.

5

High ideals and goals as well as the capacity to realize them.

6

And in our system, the person’s spiritual experience. This is not measured in terms of involvement in obvious activities. Is the person thoughtful, sensitive, spiritually-minded? While some schools want a person with a predominately conservative bias, others express no desire to make these kinds of determinations.
